![]() Mark went through several prototypes before arriving at the monster that appears in the book. |
Mark did a series of contrasting character sketches for the boy. The final character (shown right) incorporated elements from several of these sketches, so Mark dubbed him "Frankenboy" after Frankenstein's monster, which was made up of parts from several people. This was later shortened to "Frank" although his name does not appear in the book. |
![]() Because of the complexity of the layouts, Mark sketched up each of the spreads several times in increasing detail before creating the finished illustration. |
* Monster Nº 12 on the Identify your Monster page is named after Emily, although she's not entirely grateful for this honour.

There’s plenty of titles out there that follow the tale of a creature with its friends but this one is something new. Jonathan Emmett looks at monsters as if they’re machinations and need to be looked after in an amusing owner's guide that will entertain both young and old readers alike. It's witty, it's quirky and above all a title that made me chuckle a few times as well as transforming itself into a book beloved by my own personal monster (my nephew).
